Foundations of Hacking

What's up Cyber family, It’s another great day for growth, I cannot wait to tell you about my experience with this amazing platform that has me excited to log in every day and learn more!

Hands on, all inclusive, educational tracks that are easily accessible have been quite the challenge to find, until now! If you're like me and always looking to learn more, do more and practice more then this platform is right up your alley and is well suited for beginners all the way up to expert use.

I want to tell you about TryHackMe!

TryHackMe is an online, platform for anyone wanting to learn more about cybersecurity and get hands on training in a command line environment. They are currently offering a free teir, a monthly subscription at $10 a month and an annual subscription at $90 a year (just about 7 bucks a month). I have been looking for a platform like this for awhile and couldn't really beat the price so went ahead with the one year subscription.

Things I LOVE about TryHackMe

  • The interface is incredibly pleasing. All icons and items are clear with quick response.

  • Their branding is inviting, smart and modern. I feel even beginners will feel right at home here!

  • Community, this company has built a positive and educational community around their brand.

  • Industry relevant module resources like Nmap, Burp Suit and Metasploit (to name a few).

Things I DIDNT love about TryHackMe

  • I do wish they had a broader Learning Path library. As of right now there are 5 "Easy" learning paths and 3 "Intermediate" learning paths.

I'll be back to expand on this list as I have more experience with the platform. Really not much left out from what I can see so far!

QUICK ABOUT

TryHackMe was started in 2018 by Ashu Savani and Ben Spring. They identified a disparity in education and decided to come together and create virtual rooms where users could deploy and implement theoretical and practical learning components to gain hands on experience. In 2019 Jon Peters began building rooms and community around this awesome platform as well expanding it into the positive learning environment that it is today.

Completing my first certification with TryHackMe!

My first module was super fun, gamified and educational. Estimated at 24 hours of learning materials, the Introduction to Cyber Security with TryHackMe was an awesome experience that led me step by step through the process of spinning up virtual labs, finding necessary information, and traversing the command line interface.

There were 3 modules to work through for the first learning path: Intro to Cyber Security: Intro to Offensive Security, and Intro to Defensive Security. Each module opened with an intro that explained the WHAT of the topic. As I read the topics there would be “Check on learning” prompts to complete before I could move onto the next area of information. I feel like this really helped me stay focused and driven to “unlock” the next set of information or instructions.

At the end of each module there was a virtual learning environment where I was given necessary instruction to complete tasks and find the "key" words to move onto the next round. It truly felt like a treasure hunt but I was learning fundamentals to hacking as well.

My favorite lab was at the end of “Intro to Digital Forensics.” The scenario being your cat has been kidnapped and the assailant sent you a picture of your cat along with a digital ransom note. Using the given files and command line, I was guided to extract meta data from the ransom note PDF and the digital image using EXIF. Once data was extracted, I used to identify the location of the stolen kitty!

For anyone who is not sure how to get started in hacking (red teaming/pen testing), isn't sure where to get started with cybersecurity, wants to expand their current skills and knowledge or simply wants something really FUN to fill your time with that is still educational, I would say go hop on TryHackMe. If you already have a TryHackMe account, I'd love to connect! Find me Here!
